About this website
Opened in March 1905, the Crossley Sanatorium began life as a tuberculosis sanatorium and remained so for the first half of the twentieth century. From the 1960s the Crossley Sanatorium, also known as Crossley Hospital East, would operate as a care home for the elderly, and also spend a brief period as a psychiatric hospital in the 1980s. The Crossley Sanatorium lived out its final years as a boarding school. Its doors were closed for the final time in 1991.
Until the Summer of 2006, the Crossley Sanatorium lay abandoned for twenty-five years on a 66 acre site on the edge of Delamere Forest in Cheshire. The redevelopment of the hospital into the Kingsley Park residential facility began in Autumn 2006.
The purpose of this website is to create a photographic and historical record of the downfall of the Crossley Sanatorium as it begins a new chapter in its life.
My name is Daniel Clark and I am originally from Northwich in Cheshire. I work as a learning technologist at the University of Kent. This website combines two of my interests; documentary photography and architectural history. I've always had a fascination with derelict buildings, and it was this fascination that inspired me to visit the derelict Crossley Sanatorium, to research its history and to build this website.
